New Film Celebrating Mayala IPA Dedication Event Released

This week, Kimberley Land Council (KLC) and Mayala Innalang Aboriginal Corporation representatives are in Canberra, alongside Traditional Owners from across Australia, meeting with the Minister for Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, to advocate for stronger funding commitments for Indigenous Rangers and the expansion of Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs).

In November 2024, the Mayala people celebrated the dedication of their IPA - a significant milestone in Indigenous-led conservation.

Mayala Country, consisting of hundreds of islands and interconnecting reefs in the Buccaneer Archipelago, is renowned for its cultural significance and biological diversity. It's home to rock wallabies, turtles , whales, dugongs, and countless Dreamtime stories.

This is a long-awaited dream that has finally come true today.” - Mayala Traditional Owner, Janella Isaac

Watch this new film from the celebration to hear from Mayala Traditional Owners about the importance of caring for Country through Indigenous leadership.
