Wanjina Wunggurr Uungguu

Claim history:

The Uungguu Native Title application covers 25,909 square kilometers of land and sea country in the north west Kimberley. The claim is closely linked to the neighbouring Wanjina Wunggurr Dambimangari claim, which is currently in the stages of mediation, and the Wanjina Wunggurr Wilinggin claim, which was determined in August 2004. The Uungguu and Dambimangari claims were initially postponed until after the Wilinggin claim was finalised, as they represent a cultural bloc in having similar mythology based on the Wanjina spirit. The motive behind this was to use the Wilinggin claim as a test case before Native Title determinations were pursued for the other claims.

A connection report was finalised and submitted to the State Government of Western Australia in 2005 for assessment. In 2006 the State Government of Western Australia, for the purpose of mediation, was willing to agree the Uungguu people have an on-going connection to country dating back to 1829. The National Native Title Tribunal began mediation between the two parties in 2006.

The KLC considers this claim to be extremely strong and is hopeful there will be a consent determination in the near future.
