Bunuba
Claim Status:
The Bunuba consent determination mediation is continuing between Government and the claim group. A new claim Bunuba #2 has been authorized and was lodged for registration testing with the Federal Court in 2012.
Claim History:
The Bunuba native title claim is about 6000 square kilometres and includes the Fitzroy Crossing township. The application was lodged with the National Native Title Tribunal in 1999.
A connection report was provided to the State in October 2008. The State accepted connection on March 31, 2010.
The KLC worked with Traditional Owners to confirm the boundaries of the entire Bunuba cultural area.
An application was lodged with the National Native Title Tribunal at the end of 2011 to cover any remaining Bunuba country.
The second claim Bunuba #2, which extended the original Bunuba claim has been lodged and is undergoing registration testing.
This is consistent with KLC’s direction towards having Native Title determined on all traditional lands within the Kimberley region.
