Land & Sea

Looking after Country is the core function of the Land and Sea Management Unit.

The Land & Sea Management Unit works with Traditional Owners to achieve the environmental outcomes they want to see happen on-ground. It also strives to build on the long-term sustainability of work programs to create a strong future and lasting legacy for the next generation.

Projects are far reaching and cover all aspects of environmental management from protecting and enhancing waterways to wildlife and biodiversity monitoring.  These projects include the Kimberley Ranger Initiative, Indigenous Protected Areas, Kimberley Coastal Tourism, the Fitzroy Catchment Action and Management group, the Roebuck Bay Working Group and the North Kimberley Fire Abatement Project.

Traditional cultural methods are often combined with new western technologies to achieve best-practice methods and environmental outcomes.

The Kimberley Ranger Initiative employs rangers to look after the environment through conservation and land management while simultaneously providing training and on-ground skills. The program works hand-in-hand with the establishment of Indigenous Protected Areas or “Aboriginal National Parks’’, which provide a framework for Indigenous land to be managed as part of the National Reserves system.

The Kimberley Coastal Tourism Project is focused on saltwater country and investigates opportunities to develop tourism and employment.  Water is an important issue in the Kimberley and the Fitzroy Catchment Action and Management group (FITZCAM) is working to protect and enhance areas in and around the Fitzroy River.

Other projects that fall under the land and sea umbrella include: Wildlife and biodiversity monitoring, community-based management planning for Roebuck Bay through the Roebuck Bay Working Group, turtle and dugong management and the North Kimberley Fire Abatement project.
