KLC Media Statement, December 4, 2009

The Federal Government has injected $1.9 million into the Reading Recovery program to boost the reading and writing skills of Kimberley children.

The money will be given to Independent Aboriginal Community Schools, Kulkarriya Community School, Yakanarra Community School, Yiyili Aboriginal Community School, Wulungarra Community School, Nyikina Mangala Community School and Purnululu Community School.

Federal Minister for Education Julia Gillard said the funding was aimed at creating an education revolution focused on building the foundation skills of literacy and numeracy.

“The National Accelerated Literacy project aims to improve educational outcomes for students, with a particular focus on Indigenous students,’’ she said.

“Support for programs that have been shown to work will build the capacity of our teachers and schools to improve the educational outcomes of students.’’

KLC Executive Director Wayne Bergmann said the Kimberley Land Council had been pivotal in establishing the program.

“We have worked to drive this program from the ground up because our children need to learn how to read and write. It provides the foundation of their future.’’ he said.

“Despite some of our children living in remote communities, they deserve the same access to education as children living in the cities and this program is about ensuring our children are given the best start in life.’’
