Toad Busters

July, 2009

Toad Busting was the focus of the Uungguu, Wunggurr, Dambimangari and Paruku IPA rangers groups when they teamed up earlier this year to help stop the cane toad invasion.

The program is operated by the Kimberley Toadbusters and is aimed at eradicating the pesky cane toad which is threatening the Kimberley region.

Rangers have been working on the frontline with the Kimberley Toadbusters for a number of years in a bid to prevent the onslaught of cane toads into Western Australia.

The rangers have become experts at capturing the poisonous creatures, which are then humanely destroyed with carbon dioxide.

The cane toad is native to South America and was introduced in North Queensland in 1935 in a bid to control the greyback cane beetle.

The toad has rapidly spread across Australia and more recently, is threatening to storm into the Kimberley.

The cane toad is poisonous and anything it eats, suffers from heart failure and dies. It is threatening Australia’s wildlife and is being held responsible for the reduction in lizard and beetle numbers.

It also competes with native fauna for food and shelter.

The Kimberley Toad Busters is an independent group of volunteers dedicated to stopping the cane toad invasion in the Kimberley.
